Description
The Year of DK Hats celebrates Germantown DK with 12 free patterns using our favorite knitting techniques. February's design is Umbriel by Courtney Kelley. The astute among you may recognize it as a finer weight version of her very popular Wister Hat from our Year of Bulky Hats! Umbriel begins with a classic long tail cast on, a simple spiral slip stitch pattern is worked for the body, and integrated decreases shape the crown. As will our other hats, a pom pom tops it all off and a custom KW tag completes the look.

I’m enjoying this hat pattern. The spiral stitch is something new to me and at first I thought it would be difficult but if you break it down, it’s not complicated. I got caught up with the wording but thankfully a chart is included so I checked my knitting with that and was able to figure out row seven. It’s a fun project.

I haven’t knit this hat yet, but love all the kelbourne patterns. Especially the year of hats free patterns. It’s a win win when using the gorgeous kelbourne wool!
Love the pattern and how it swirls, you really have to concentrate as its not for a beginner knitter as the spiral stitch can get in the wrong place, I am up to the last one to eight round then the fun begins to get the decrease bit right but hoping I do as its a lovely looking hat if knitted correctly wish me luck. I am making this in a alpaca yarn so its nice and soft as cannot get the Kelbourne wools here.
