Crochet in Ends as You Go

Crocheting over the ends after switching colors is an excellent way to weave ends as you go, especially when working multicolored pieces like granny squares or stripes. But what if there is a space in between your stitches or a high contrast in color? This method carries the new end throughout the work, adding additional security and invisibility! Win/win!

Note: the end I am weaving in is referred to as “end”, while the working yarn is referred to as “yarn”. The example below is a basic granny square, as featured in the Granny Square Blanket.

Begin the new color, leaving a 6-8” end. It is best to begin in a corner or where you will be working multiple stitches in one space.

STEP 1 / Work the corner, holding the end along the stitches from the previous round and crocheting over it, hiding in in the stitches.
STEP 2 / Work until the last DC, stopping before you complete the stitch (there should be 2 loops on your hook).
STEP 3 / Move the end up and over the yarn from front to back, in between the yarn and your hook. Complete the DC as normal.
STEP 4 / The end is now “trapped” at the top of your work near the hook.
STEP 5 / Move the end over the yarn, from front to back, in between the yarn and your hook. Ch1.
STEP 6 / Move the end over the yarn, from back to front, in between the yarn and your hook. Ch1.
STEP 7 / To move the end back down to the base of the work, hold the end and yarn together and YO in preparation to make your first DC.
STEP 8 / Insert the hook in preparation to work your DC, holding the end along the top of the stitches, wrap the yarn around the hook, and pull through.

STEP 9 / Complete the DC. The end should be back at the bottom of the work near the stitches.

Repeat from Step 1, carrying the end up on the 3rd DC, until you have worked enough stitches to feel totally secure. (I like to do a corner, 3 DC, and then another corner). Trim the end, leaving about 1/4" tail to allow for slight shifting with use/blocking.

As you can see from the reverse, the end is invisibly woven in and secure!
