Prospero Hat Pattern

I anxiously await the monthly hat pattern from Kelbourne. I have made several, learning new stitches and techniques. As a new knitter, I found the patterns easy to follow. THANKS, KELBOURNE!

I love the gansey patterns that make up the Prospero hat! I expect to make it more than once because I want to make an orange version this month for Truth and Reconciliation Day at the end of Sept. I’d like to make a green one to go with a gansey-inspired cardigan I wear often, and of course I need one to wear everyday too. It might be in a colour close to the sample Prospero. My first gansey, made some years ago, but still in use, is that shade and I have some yarn that would match nicely.
As to your yarn, I’m sorry but I’ve never used any Kelbourne yarns because I’ve not seen them in any of the few local yarn stores. Also I don’t order on-line from American stores anymore. I’m in Canada and postage has always been an issue but now tariffs are making it even more expensive to buy from American yarn stores. I truly hope that someday I’ll be able to buy yarn from you; I’ve certainly gotten some lovely hat patterns from you, so it’s the least I can do!
For what it’s worth, my orange Prospero will be knit with Patons Decor, an acrylic/wool blend. The green one with the sweater yarn leftovers which are Elann Peruvian Highland Wool. The oldest gansey’s Prospero might be made with Paton's Superwool worsted, if I have enough; I’ve used the leftover balls and partials to reknit the cuffs a few times over the years and used some for patching snags. I could use some of the remaining balls of SuperWool to make it a contrasting colour, or use some Briggs & Little Heritage that is a close match. It would also be worn with the Camp Cardigan I’ve currently got on my needles. Bonus!

I love the different stitches. I hoped to knit this in the car on a long road trip but it was a bit too challenging for me to work in the car.

I am on my fourth one. I have a lot of relatives I like to remember at the holidays with something I knit. This stylish hat will be a gift for many of them. I enjoy knitting it.
