Introducing BC Garn

We are happy to introduce you to a new member of the KW family, BC Garn! You've probably noticed the yarns popping up on our blog and social media, and we figured it was time for a formal introduction!

BC Garn Yarn Loch Lomond Lace GOTS

BC Garn, a family owned Danish yarn company, was founded in 1972 as Væveværkstedet i Barrit (the Weaving Workshop in Barrit). Their initial focus on high-quality weaving yarns has evolved into a line of luxury organic and ecologically minded hand knitting yarns, offered at an affordable and competitive price. BC Garn is known for quality yarns, and Alba, Bio Balance, Semilla Melange, Loch Lomond, Loch Lomond Lace, Semilla, and Bio Shetland are certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) - the highest international standard for organic fiber production.

"The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain."

GOTS certified yarns and textiles are globally recognized, not just for using organically grown fibers, but for ensuring the social and environmental conditions of every level of production are to the highest standards. The social responsibility aspect of the GOTS certification ensures that:

  • Employment is freely chosen
  • Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining are respected
  • Working conditions are safe and hygienic
  • Child labour must not be used
  • Living wages are provided
  • Working hours are not excessive; no discrimination is practiced
  • Regular employment is provided; harsh or inhumane treatment is prohibited

GOTS certification also ensures that the energy and water consumption, the emissions, environmental responsibility, and chemical outputs from the field to the shelves of your local yarn shop are of the highest international organic and ecological standard. Kelbourne Woolens received our GOTS Certification through Oregon Tilth on April 17, 2018.
