Year of Mittens: March Mittens

By Kate Gagnon Osborn on March 1, 2017October 8, 2020

We have March Mittens mosiac madness here at KW headquarters! This mitten uses traditional color work to produce a modern motif inspired by simple but stunning Moroccan tiles.

To add to the rich, visual patterning of the mitten, the cuff is accented with Latvian braids leaning counter to each other, hemming in a simple and elegant cross motif. We have a helpful tutorial for the Latvian braids in case this is your first time knitting them.

The palm and thumb are knit in a simple checkerboard pattern that creates a warm and firm fabric. The mosaic pattern fits neatly into the shape of the mitten and is finished with a set of bold stripes at the top.

YARN: The Fibre Co. Cumbria Fingering: purple moor grass (MC), scaffel pike (CC), 1 skein each.
GAUGE: 30 sts + 38 rnds = 4” (10 cm) on larger needles in color work, after blocking.
NEEDLES:
1 – set US 1 (2.25 mm) DPNs.
NOTIONS: Tapestry needle, stitch marker.
SIZE: 10.75” (27.25 cm) total length, 8” (22.75 cm) circumference.
SKILLS: Latvian Braid, stranded colorwork from charts.

USEFUL TIPS:

There are three Tips and Tricks that you might find useful for the March Mittens. The first is one we use often for color work patterns, Working from Charts, and the second is a tutorial we created for the November Mittens that is very useful when doing colorwork, Working From Charts: Alternate Colorways.

The third, as previously mentioned, is specific to this mitten:
• For a pictorial tutorial on creating a Latvian braid, you can find a tutorial here.

You can buy the individual pattern via our pattern page here, or on Ravelry here. If you are a subscriber to the full year of patterns, your update notification should be waiting for you in your inbox!
