While on her trip, Kate had limited suitcase space but made sure to pack enough yarn to knit her cousin’s son and daughter cardigans. It was the first time she was to meet Guillermo (“Lolo”), and over a year since seeing his sister, Maggie, so the two sweaters seemed like the perfect combination Christmas and thank you gifts.
Sadly, Kate woefully underestimated Maggie’s height and it was very apparent the sweater was much too small (a lot of growing happens in a year!) once she was able to see her in person, so it was abandoned with no hope of finishing in time. Not wanting to be empty handed at the time of gift giving, she dove into Lolo’s sweater in the hopes that having the 14 month old within arms reach would ensure a good fit – or at least a sweater with room to grow!
Thanks to great advice from our knitter Twitter friends, Kate picked the Jasper Diamond Hoodie (rav link) for Lolo’s sweater. Unfortunately, she was unable to schedule a trip to her LYS to grab the book before leaving on her trip, so she used the images of the pattern as inspiration, Lolo’s basic measurements as a guide and made up the pattern as she went along.
Other modifications included using a worsted weight (Canopy Worsted in Blue Crown), smaller diamond repeat, omitting the hood, knitting the body and sleeves in pieces and finishing with a seamless raglan yoke and a slight v-neck. Sadly, the sweater wasn’t finished before Christmas morning – her hosts kept them very busy so there was very little covert knitting time! – and the buttons were sewn on the day of their departure.
The family should be visiting the US this summer, so Kate has plans to re knit a (much bigger!) sweater for Maggie. Better late than never, right?
So PRECIOUS!!!!!

Adorable!
What a little heartbreaker, so handsome in his cardigan and overalls!
Lolo and his sweater are both gorgeous! Like the unfinished red hat also.
