Crochet Something Contest: Best Art or Sculptural Crochet

In case you missed it, here is a brief recap of our Crochet Summer Crochet Something Contest (CSCSC):

THE CROCHET SUMMER CROCHET SOMETHING CONTEST!

This non-competitive contest is a great opportunity to spend the summer trying something new, or finally challenging yourself to make that thing you’ve always wanted to make. This feel-good contest is meant to be a fun way to gather more people to the craft of crochet.

There are six categories:
• Best Garment
• Best First Crochet Project
• Best Art/Sculptural Work
• Best Doily
• Best Home Decor (afghan, pillow, tea cozy, bathmat, etc.
• Name your own category (anything that doesn’t fit into one of the previous categories, bonus points for a funny, yet tasteful, category heading)

Each category will have one winner, with many superlative-laden runners up. EVERYONE is a winner with Crochet Summer! Post your entry on Instagram by August 31st with the hashtag #crochetsomethingcontest2018 and you could WIN!

Whether it's amigurumi, artful mandalas and wall hangings, or a crocheted cozy for a car, crochet really does lend itself to fulfilling the more whimsical (or completely nuts) side of our crafting selves. This category is definitely the most fun one of the Crochet Summer Crochet Something Contest, and here are some ideas to get those creative juices flowing!

Amiguri

Life doesn't get much cuter than when it's filled with crocheted stuffies! This alpaca, complete with pompons, is designed by amigurumi guru Yania Schenkel, author of the book Animal Friends of Pica Pau

Mandalas

A crochet mandala is meant to be meditative to create and a joy to behold. They don't have to serve any other purpose - unless you want them to. This low-stress, high-reward approach to crafting is sometimes just what we need. Take a look at some of these beautiful mandalas on Ravelry:

Art Installations

We featured this crocheted doily masterpiece by Ashley Blalock in our Featured Finds newsletter, and if you missed it you should definitely check out her work. It's just astonishing!

Polish born and NYC based artist Olek, has created an entire crocheted room in an apartment. That is dedication!

Artist Jo Hamilton, based in Oregon, has crocheted numerous portraits which are truly a marvel to behold!
