KW Sweet Summer Sweater: Yarn Requirements

Now that you have some great ideas, and you've gone through the swatching process, you need to go get some yarn! OR, you're already knitting away (as you should be - the contest ends in just two weeks!) and need to know how much more yarn to buy or how to calculate yardage for other sizes.

If you are writing your own pattern, how do you know how much yarn to get? When the sweater is done, make sure to weigh your sweater on a gram scale and then dividing that weight by 50 (Savannah comes in 50g skeins) should give you the approximate yardage which you can then add to your pattern. But that only give you yardage after the sweater has been knit. Luckily, our predecessors have done most of the hard work for you.

Our friends at Jimmy Beans Wool have a super handy knitting calculator.

And here is table of yarn requirements that I found at Dummies.com:

One additional tip is to always buy a skein or two more than you think you need. Always check with your LYS on their return policy. Sometimes if the yarn remains skeined and tagged {not wound into a ball}, you can return or exchange the excess yarn for something else for your next project. If they don't accept returns, make a matching hat!
